| THE
HISTORY OF ROULETTE Roulette, literally translated, means “small wheel” and is the oldest casino game played today. Gambling with the wheel began almost with its invention. The Romans are said to have gambled with spinning chariot wheels and various “wheel of fortune” devices. Pascal, a French mathematics scholar, is supposed to have invented the game in the 17th century as an offshoot of perpetual motion devices. French roulette reached England sometime around 1820. Descriptions of the game show that it is almost identical to the roulette game now played here. The game became very popular in the bars and bordellos of the old west during the California gold rush and Nevada silver era, so much so that fortunes in gold sometimes traded hands on the bet of a single number. |
